McCartney
I am searching for the McCartney family who seemed to live in Dungiven, County Derry, all the way up to possibly the present day.

They owned a farm there is one of my only clues and are decendents of Michael and Margaret MCCartney, who I think was possibly from county cork.

Margaret Sheehan
Hello Myra

Sorry about the long delay in my reply, I was adding to the family tree by having my 2nd daughter.

Margaret Sheehan (McCartney) is my great great grandmother. She did indeed marry Michael McCartney in Co Cork and move up to Derry. From there they had a daughter who is my Great Grandparent (she moved to Glasgow which is where this line becomes Scottish).

According to my mum, Margaret was from Skibbereen so I think we are talking about the same family here. It will be interesting to compare notes to see how the diffrent sides of the family branch off.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Matthew

Hello Matthew,
If you had an ancestor called Margaret Sheehan who came from Skibbereen and married a Michael McCartney and went to live in Londonderry near to Dungiven then I am almost sure that we have the same ancestor. The name McCartney is also Carton, Carty McCarton etc.
My Grandmother was Rose Carton but married as Rose McCartney. They lived in a place called Lower Muldonagh Near Claudy in County Londonderry. This is also near to Dungiven. The Parish is Banagher. I have been trying to find out where Margaret came from in County Cork. If you look on the 1901 census for Ireland you will find the family living in Muldonagh. As I understand it my grandmother Rose was only 17 when she married MichaelDonaghy who was in his forties and had a large farm in Ballyholly, a townland nearby. There was quite a large family in the Carton/McCartney household and I know that two of the sons went to America but one came home and managed the family farm in Muldonagh. The farm is still occupied by McCartneys. Sorry to go on but I am really excited that I may have found the answer to my question about how Margaret Sheehan came to live so far away from her home in Cork. Please let me know if this is the right Margaret Sheehan and I will give you more information regarding her present day family.
If I am barking up the wrong tree then that information would be helpful too. Thank you.
