Can anyone help please?
Hi
I am trying to trace my gt grandfather STEPHEN GEOGHAN, who according to the 1901 census, stated he came from Galway.

I have no idea of when he arrived in England, but in 1846 he married Louisa Paddison in Stafford. Sadly by the 1881 census, Louisa & her children were in the workhouse, in 1885 the children, except for the eldest son Patrick, were sent to Canada, and Louisa remarried stating that she was a widow.
I can find no further trace of Patrick.

I could find no trace of Stephen until the 1901 census when he showed up in Liverpool, stating he was single! he died in 1919.
Perhaps he had deserted his wife & children and went to Ireland? but then returned to England in 1901.

According to the marriage cert & the census, Stephen was a Master Tailor (also his father Lawrence, he could have remained in Ireland?)

Can anyone tell me if Geoghan would have been the correct surname, or could it have been altered when Stephen arrived in England?

I am so desperate to know if I have any remaining relatives in Ireland, I would welcome any information no matter how small in order to trace them.
Please can anyone help ?, thank you
