James Connor - from Kerry to New Zealand
My 2nd great-grandfather was James Connor and he was from Kerry. Unfortunately details are scant about his life in Kerry. He was born about 1836, and emigrated to New Zealand about 1866. That is all we know there.
He married in 1875 in Christchurch, New Zealand to a Norwegian woman, Oline Olsdatter. She was also known as Lena, and Olive. She was from Elverum, Norway, and emigrated to NZ in 1872.
They settled firstly in Southbridge, Canterbury, New Zealand, and then at Chertsey, Canterbury, NZ. They had 7 children, but only one child went on to have children, and I am descended from their son Brian O'Connor, born 3 Feb 1880 at Southbridge, Selwyn, Canterbury, New Zealand
James Connor died 12 Jul 1919 at Chertsey, Ashburton, Canterbury, New Zealand.
I have had my dad DNA tested via Ancestry.com and YDNA tested by FTDNA. From the roots maps and from reaching out to people he shares DNA with, it seems our roots are from round Tralee/Killarney, and also round Listowel.
I'm am sorry I have no parental names, parish or townland to go on. James' kids birth certificates, his death certificate only state 'Kerry' as his birthplace.
But if anyone has a family member called James Connor in their tree who emigrated to NZ round 1866, please feel free to reach out.
Best regards,
Shelley O'Connor,
Auckland, New Zealand.

Re: James Connor - from Kerry to New Zealand
Hi There,
Digging a bit deeper, our James Connor may have been born a little later around 1840. I think the death date on his death certificate is incorrect, as it doesn't marry up with the age of his marriage (35 in 1875) and the birth of his 1st child (35 in 1876).
