i understand the gibsons came from antrim co,,,and probably the smileys,, there is a possibility the smileys went to dublin, also the shearer and shanks were related here somehow,, i am still checking through family archives
I find your Gibson/Smiley post interesting because I am looking for info on a William Gibson of Carrick,Co Derry. They attended Bovevagh Presbyterian Church. There was a family of Smileys, lived near them,at Scriggan,Dungiven,Co Derry. They attended Dungiven Church of Ireland. one member of the Smiley family,a young man,was attending church in 1950's(I can't remember his Christian name)
Probably pure coincidence, but because of the Gibson name in there,I felt I had to reply. Incidentally my Gibson Query concerns William Gibson (wife may have been Martha ??) His son Alexander Gibson b 1833 m'd Mary Ann Rosborough. One of their sons,Joseph Gibson m'd Mary Ann Mc Cully. One of their daughters,Margaret Gibson m'd Joseph Harper, parents of my late husband. They all lived in Co Derry - areas of Carrick,Scriggan,Banagher,Dungiven.
