COLE / McKENZIE, Sligo
William Cole and Jane McKenzie married St Johns Sligo in 1842, and emigrated to New South Wales in 1850. William was a farmer, son of Richard Cole and Jane Carr of Carrickhenry, Sligo. Jane was the daughter of John McKenzie (soldier turned farmer?) and Jane (Irwin?) Can anyone help with our Irish roots please ?07/02/2012 2:06 pm

mckenzies
Hi Jenny, I am trying to find the family of my 3xgreatgrandfather John McKenzie who was transported to Aussie with his brother James in 1807 on the Duke of Portland. I know they were sentenced in Sligo. Maybe we have the same McKenzies?? All i know is their father was John? The family were previously Jacobites from Scotland. Cheers Susan.17/03/2013 6:19 am

Re: COLE / McKENZIE, Sligo
Dear Susan
We believe our John McKenzie was born c.1772, Sligo, and died in Sligo in 1845. We believe he was a soldier in the militia turned farmer. Our Jane was born c.1817, and she had a number of siblings / half siblings, 2 of whom, George and Eliza, also came to Australia. We know nothing of John's parents / siblings / cousins. Being a Scottish name, I'd be surprised if there was no connection, but have no helpful information for you. Our John appears to have been at east Drumascibbole in 1824. Griffiths valuation 1858 has a James McKenzie in Love Lane Sligo. We do not know whether he was son or brother of John.
Sorry to be so little help - please let me know how you get on
Jenny
