Does anyone know how to research British Military officers in Ireland during the mid to late 19th century? My great great grandfather was a Captain Kirk and was reputed to have been in the British Army in Tyrone. His daughter Mary, an only child, married Michael McLaughlin and left Ireland for America, i.e.

Do you know what part of Tyrone your relatives came from? As well as being a Kirk from Tyrone I have Philadelphia connections from the 1880s. It seems that lots of people from my part of the county emigrated there - my ancestors' names were O'Connor & McCrossan.
