Edward Cavanagh
I am looking for the parents and siblings of Edward Cavanagh.

Edward was born in 1823 in Bath, England, according to his death certificate. He married Elizabeth Jane Brown in 1851 in Fort Beaufort, South Africa. They had 13 known children.

In 1798, Edward Cavanagh’s parents left Ireland. They settled in England. Young Edward, barely a teen, went to sea in the “HMS Rattlesnake” rig-o-war under Captain Hobson. In 1838 he joined the 90th Light Infantry, which became the Scottish Rifles. He formed one of the Guard of Honour on the 10th February 1840 when Prince Albert arrived in England to marry Queen Victoria. After that, he was ordered over to Ireland on recruiting service. In 1843 he left with a draft of men for Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). When returning home in 1846, his ship was damaged by a severe storm and the ship diverted to South Africa. He disembarked there and made his life there.

A lot is known about Edward’s life in South Africa, which can be shared on request, but no information is known about his parents or siblings. After 20 years of looking, it is hoped that someone, somewhere out there knows something that they can share.
